My therapist and I have had this talk now every spring… 😂😂😂😂 I’m so programmed NOT to rest that actual rest is a struggle. I teach full time, then during the summer I fill in that time with teaching online classes because I really struggle with that just letting rest be rest.

Here’s to Resting Girl Summer!

Yes!! You deserve some shut off time. Teachers put a years worth of work into 9 months. Take some time summer!!

Oof those online classes will get ya. I predominantly teach online now and the grading/admin work alone is already so much more work than for the in-person classes. But I hope your summer classes go as smoothly as possible and you’re able to spend time decompressing and enjoying summer.

Hi from summer break (post decompression days)! This was such a timely pep talk. I started off this past semester with fairly decent daily screen time, but by the time grades were due my screen time had really climbed up there and one of my summer goals is to get back to more consistent daily analog time. The two I was good about maintaining during the semester were reading for 30-60 minutes and then an evening walk at the end of my work day. The other month I also started incorporating a monthly trip to my local book store for an iced coffee and to pick out 2 new books to read (with the very important caveat that I actually have to finish reading both those books before my next bookstore run lol). What I want to incorporate more of into my analog time this summer is getting back into watercoloring, more crafting with my Cricut, beach/pool days with my friends and their kids, and I’ve been heavily considering applying to volunteer at my local animal shelter.

I love this so much!! I’m really leaning into beach days, painting, and spending more time in the kitchen cooking and making new recipes. It’s so powerful to remember that we can keep living life despite all the tech.

Sam/Amanda - thoughts on building Resting Girl Summer into the substack? Some of the other substacks I subscribe to have a chat option for more casual interactions. Maybe resting girl summer could be a once a week chat where we all could post/share pictures from our analog time (ex: the the things that were made, the garden that was tended, the view from a hike they went on, etc).

Absolutely!!!!! We haven’t started a chat feature bc we weren’t sure if you all wanted it but we would loooovee to!

Gurl, start the chat. In addition to being low stakes/high reward in terms of community engagement, it could be sooo fun. Especially if something like resting girl summer is the jumping off point. Or even if it’s just fun, light hearted, practical application of Sam’s pep talks.

My thirteen year old daughter just left competitive dance and we are embracing resting girl summer! It can be hard to model being a girl who rests- I tend to fill up my days from the moment I open my eyes until I fall into bed at night. Not great. I need to model better and help her just be. I’m ready for her to learn how to rest, how to take breaks, and shut off her brain Thanks for this reminder!
